Rumored spec leaks give some indication of how the Nintendo Switch 2 will fare against the PlayStation 4

It’s been over seven years since the Nintendo Switch was released on March 3, 2017. Since then, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 141 million worldwide, making it the third best-selling console behind the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS.

Unfortunately, it seems Nintendo isn’t quite ready to release details about the Nintendo Switch’s successor just yet, although we’re getting noticeably closer. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa told fans earlier this month that they will make an announcement about their next console this fiscal year, but we shouldn’t expect that announcement to happen during the next Nintendo Direct in June.

Nintendo’s fiscal year is known to run from April 1st to March 31st. On a related note, this means we should have finally confirmed details about the Switch’s successor sometime before March 31, 2025.

However, we have actually heard a lot of rumors about the new console. As there was much speculation that the successor was to be a direct upgrade of the Nintendo Switch, fans often referred to this mystery console as “Nintendo Switch 2”.

Recently, Centro Leaks collected everything that has been rumored about the Nintendo Switch 2. Although it should not be surprising that the Nintendo Switch 2 will not be as powerful as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, consoles released about four years ago, the implementation of DLSS will give the new console a comparable quality image.

Additionally, the Nintendo Switch 2 will have 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. NVDIA’s T239 processor, a variant of the T234 processor specifically built for this rumored Nintendo console, will make the console run virtually without booting.

The T239 is rumored to have a maximum memory bandwidth of 102.4GB/s, though Nintendo may eventually reduce that bandwidth to improve efficiency. This is a significant improvement over the Nintendo Switch’s memory bandwidth of 25.6GB/s.

The PlayStation 4 is said to come with 8GB of RAM. It’s worth noting that the PlayStation 4 has 500GB of internal memory and 176GB/s of memory bandwidth, both of which surpass the rumored specs of the Nintendo Switch 2.

In theory, this could suggest that the PlayStation 4 will have better loading times than the Nintendo Switch 2, but the aforementioned DLSS technology may actually give the Nintendo Switch 2 unique advantages.

A previous port of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was rumored to be showcased behind closed doors on the Switch successor as a tech demo. This tech demo reportedly ran at a higher frame rate and resolution.

Additionally, we’ve heard that “The Matrix Awakens,” a tech demo originally created for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series to showcase the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5, has also been featured on the new console.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is believed to support 4K in dock and 1080p in handheld mode, which will have an 8-inch LCD screen. It’s an improvement over the Switch’s 6.2-inch screen.

Factors like processor speed and refresh rate are still unknown, but one rumor suggests that Nintendo is potentially preparing first-person games that can play at 240 frames per second.

There are still many unknowns about the Nintendo Switch 2, but these rumors suggest that it will be a much more powerful console than the Nintendo Switch. Thanks to Nvidia’s DLSS technology, it looks like the console’s performance will be more comparable to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series rather than the PlayStation 4.
